You know Priscilla and Perpetua and Felicitas and Helen, Monica and Lucia and Elizabeth and Katharina, But do you recall Many other female saints at all?
Well, do you? Time to take a deep dive beyond The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod’s calendar of feasts, festivals, and commemorations to check out some more of the most faithful, courageous, and inspiring Christian women we know about. Why? So “that we may follow their faith and good works” (AC XXI:1). After all,
Our Confession approves honors to the saints. For here a threefold honor is to be approved. The first is thanksgiving. For we ought to give thanks to God because He has shown examples of mercy; because He has shown that He wishes to save men; because He has given teachers or other gifts to the Church…. The second service is the strengthening of our faith; when we see the denial forgiven Peter, we also are encouraged to believe the more that grace truly superabounds over sin, Rom. 5:20. The third honor is the imitation, first, of faith, then of the other virtues, which everyone should imitate according to his calling (Apology XXI [IX]: 4-6).
My young daughters love to read stories about the saints. I suppose this is because so many of them are just good stories. But, let’s be honest. So are a lot of stories. In fact, my oldest is going through a second Star Wars phase right now. Not gonna lie. I’m right there with her. She can tell you the difference between a Skywalker and a Kenobi and the various grades of Jedi and Sith. She even has a character encyclopedia. Basically, it’s a Star Wars “Lives of the Saints” book. She’s been pouring over the Star Wars characters and memorizing their attributes for days now.
I have to admit, I’m pleased that she’s drawn to some of the most virtuous characters. Her favorites are Ahsoka Tano, Rey, and Obi-Wan Kenobi. But, for all her kindness to Baby Yoda / Grogu, Ahsoka Tano never really lived a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. Neither did Rey, for all her courage in the face of evil. Or Obi-Wan, for all his self-sacrifice. One reason my girls keep coming back to stories of the Christian saints is possibly that they also provide examples of faith and virtue. But, they really did live a long time ago and far far away. More than that, in Christ, they live still and await with us the resurrection of the dead and the New Jerusalem lit by the Lamb once slain. The object of their faith is the one true Triune God, whose grace frees us for works of service to neighbor.
So since I haven’t yet found a collection of “Lives of Female Saints” including everyone I’d want to include, I’m going to write some “entries” here for my daughters. Everyone else is welcome to follow along.

I am looking forward to this series so much! I know a lot of the lady saints included in the LCMS commemorations, but not many beyond that. The illustration/example with Ahsoka Tano & Rey is perfect - my boys are in a Star Wars phase, too. :)
And I LOVE this: "[the Christian saints ] really did live a long time ago and far far away. More than that, in Christ, they live still and await with us the resurrection of the dead and the New Jerusalem lit by the Lamb once slain. The object of their faith is the one true Triune God, whose grace frees us for works of service to neighbor."
Interesting! Looking forward to learning more.
